Supervisor Training Program Welcomes 17 Staff

Duke’s ‘First Time Supervisor’ program runs for a year

Duke’s Professional Development Institute welcomed a group of 17 staff members last week to its latest First Time Supervisor program.

The employees, representing offices and departments from across the university and health system, will spend a year in the program receiving coaching and mentoring sessions to prepare them for next steps in their careers at Duke. Participants learn about communication, project and budget management and managing difficult work relationships at no charge. In return for Duke's investment in their education, class members commit to staying at Duke for at least two years after the completion of the program.

Sara Clark, assistant manager of special events at Duke Chapel, said she is excited to be a part of the First Time Supervisors program because classroom learning and the prospect of working one-on-one with a mentor offers a variety of ways to expand her skillset.

“I’m committed to Duke for the long haul, and the fact that the university is willing to invest this much time and money into growing my career here says, very powerfully, that Duke is committed to me,” she said. “What a great and rare feeling that is, knowing that you’re valued so highly by your employer.”

Employees were selected for the First Time Supervisor program after supervisors submitted nominations on their behalf. Classes take place twice a month until graduation in November 2016.
