Small Fire Extinguished in French Family Science Center

Fire began in fume hood, individuals are allowed back in the building

The small fire in the French Family Science Center started in a lab's fume hood.

Update, 11:30 a.m.: The small fire that was extinguished in the French Family Science Center Wednesday morning started in a lab's fume hood. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.   

The Duke University Police Department received the fire alarm notification at 7:55 a.m. The affected lab is on the second floor of the building, and water did spread to the first floor. Water and smoke damage is contained to this area of the building, and individuals are allowed access to the unaffected areas of the French Family Science Center at this time.

Cleanup is ongoing and Duke Facility Operations is isolating power in the affected area.

Update, 9:15 a.m.: Individuals are now being allowed back in the building.
