Obama encourages conservation with private investment

Presidential memo released today encourages private investment in conservation of  America’s natural resources.Quote:  "It is encouraging to see this White House memo build upon what we have learned over the last decade about designing programs to reduce impacts from activities like road building and mining," said Lydia Olander, director of the Ecosystem Services Program at Duke University’s Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions. "The memo calls for agencies to extend the most effective of these approaches to public lands, and species that are not yet listed but at-risk, in ways that expand opportunities for private investment in restoration and conservation."Bio:Lydia Olander’s work focuses on environmental markets and mitigation. Her work has included development of a guidebook that helps federal agencies and other actors more fully understand how people are affected by natural resource planning and management decisions. •    Archive video interview on a federal resource management guidebook (starts 32 seconds): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-5RXoy6lSU •    For additional comment, contact Lydia Olander at:lydia.olander@duke.edu; 919-613-8713---Media Contact:Karl Bates(919) 681-8054, karl.bates@duke.edu _        _        _        _Duke experts on a variety of other topics can be found at http://newsoffice.duke.edu/resources-media/faculty-experts.
