Free Holiday Concert Offers Music for Everyone

Duke Medicine Orchestra performs for community on Dec. 3

Faculty and staff are invited to a free holiday concert featuring the Duke Medicine Orchestra on Dec. 3 in the Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans Center for Health Education.

About 90 Duke doctors, researchers, staff, students and affiliates from across 26 different departments comprise the ensemble, which will play selections. In addition to holiday music, visitors will hear titles such as "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables and the Lion King’s "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" with student vocalist Meredith Achey.

The event, organized by Duke’s Staff and Family Programs in Human Resources, runs from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Trent Semans Center. Sweet treats will be served after the performance, which is open to the community.

“The holidays provide us with a great opportunity to bring the Duke community together, see old friends and make new ones,” said Gina McKoy, program coordinator with Staff and Family Programs. “As an added plus, the Duke Medicine Orchestra offers the chance to support our fellow Duke employees, who share their impressive talents and spread some holiday cheer.”

During the performance, visitors can enter a drawing to win a CD of the orchestra’s music at the Dec. 3 event. Employees can also enjoy a live performance of the full arrangement for free at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 9 at Baldwin Auditorium for the group’s “City Trees” concert.

Verena Moesenbichler-Bryant, Duke Medicine Orchestra’s artistic director and conductor of the volunteer orchestra, noted that the performances offer something for everyone.

“We will play repertoire ranging from classical works, to Broadway, to holiday music,” she said. “We hope faculty and staff take an hour out of their busy lives and let us share the magic of the holiday season.”

Employees are encouraged to walk, bike or take the bus to the Trent Semans Center for the concert. Duke’s H2 and H5 buses make closest stops near the center. Faculty and staff can find other bus routes and track buses in real time using Duke’s Transloc system. Parking is available at the Bryan Center Parking Garage (PGIV)for $2 an hour.
