Appointment of New Chief Human Resources Officer for DUHS

Rhonda Brandon from BJC Healthcare to replace Steve Smith following retirement

The following memo was distributed to DUHS employees from the Chancellor's Office.

Dear Colleagues:

With great pleasure, I write to announce that Rhonda Brandon will join our team as the Chief Human Resources Officer for Duke University Health System, effective February 1, 2016.  I believe that Rhonda, with her stellar credentials and deep experience, will bring great value to our organization.  And I am delighted to welcome her to the DUHS executive team and the Office of the Chancellor.

In her role as CHRO, Rhonda will oversee our efforts to advance a world-class workforce that positions us to meet our long-term strategic goals.  As a part of the senior executive leadership team, Rhonda will be a key driver of our pushes to improve performance measurement, professional development and our work culture.  She will offer trusted counsel to senior staff, advocating on behalf of all of our employees.

Rhonda is currently the Senior Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer for BJC Healthcare in St. Louis, Mo.  She joined BJC Healthcare in 2006 as Vice President of Human Resources for Missouri Baptist Medical Center and was named Vice President of Operations for BJC’s Shared Services Human Resources team in 2010.  She was appointed to her current role in 2012 and has provided human resources and organizational advice to BJC’s senior leaders.

Prior to her service to BJC Healthcare, Rhonda served as Vice President of Human Resources for Colonial Pipeline Company and, prior to that, as Director of Human Resources and Global Information Technology for Nike.  She is a graduate of Hampton University (BA, Mass Communications) and American University (MS, Organization Development).

Her appointment concludes an extensive national search necessitated by the upcoming retirement this December of Steve Smith.  I’ll have much more to say and share with you about the extraordinary impact Steve has had within Duke as we approach his well-earned retirement in December.

Please join me in welcoming Rhonda to our Duke family.  I ask that you support her during her transition to this important position in our organization.

Sincerely,

A. Eugene Washington, MDChancellor for Health Affairs,President of Duke University Health System
