Welcome to the Week at Duke in 60 Seconds.

Congratulations to Duke’s own Dr. Paul Modrich for receiving this year’s Nobel Prize in chemistry. Dr. Modrich and two others, including a University of North Carolina researcher, won the prize for mapping how cells repair damaged DNA. This research is being used for developing new cancer treatments.

Last weekend, a block party in downtown Durham commemorated the 10-year anniversary of the Nasher Museum of Art. The event included the unveiling of a mural on the wall of the Downtown YMCA and a screening of a documentary about the mural.

Students are just back from Fall Break this week, but you can see how they spent their time away from campus by checking out their photos on Duke’s Facebook page.

Finally, Dr. Damon Tweedy recently wrote a book called Black Man in a White Coat examining issues of race and medicine. Since the book’s release, Dr. Tweedy has been interviewed by NPR, CBS and many other news outlets.
