Free Food, iPad Mini Raffle During ‘Compliance Week’

Learn more about compliance efforts impact Duke Nov. 2 to 6

What constitutes a conflict of interest? Can you freelance for another Duke department? Is looking up the medical chart for a family member allowed?

Duke employees can find the answers to these and many more questions as part of national Compliance and Ethics Week on campus. Between Nov. 2 and 6, Duke will hold events to increase awareness and promote and share information about ethical behavior throughout the university.

Members of the Office of Audit, Risk & Compliance will host “Breakfast with Compliance” from 9 to 10 a.m. each day next week in the Bryan Center, where faculty and staff can learn more about Duke’s own compliance program. The event will include to-go refreshments and handouts about Duke compliance efforts. A lunchtime event will also be held at the Duke Clinic (South) cafeteria from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

At both stops, employees can drop off their business card to be entered into a raffle to win an iPad Mini.

“Whether at the institutional level or a specific operational area, we have various federal, state and other regulations we all have to follow,” said Ericka Kranitz, Duke’s director of compliance monitoring. “We want to let people know who we are and be open for questions.”

At Duke, compliance includes on all sorts of issues, from protecting student data and HIPAA laws to procurement card use and NCAA regulations. “There are thousands we deal with every day,” Kranitz said.

To help shine a light on the variety of ways compliance impacts daily operations at Duke, additional offices and departments will join Audit, Risk & Compliance every day, including University Registrar, Office of Information Technology, Office of Institutional Equity, Duke Police and more.
