Duke University this morning paid tribute to Patriot Day and the six university alumni killed in the 2001 9/11 attacks by placing a wreath at the campus memorial grove outside of Keohane Quad.

The six alumni who died in the attacks are Michael Morgan Taylor '81, Frederick C. Rimmele III, M.D. '94, A. Todd Rancke '81, Christopher Todd Pitman '93, Peter Ortale '87, and J. Robinson "Rob" Lenoir '84. Around 9 a.m. – the time around when the planes crashed into New York, Washington, D.C., and Shanksville, Pa. --  Duke Alumni Association staff placed a wreath at the memorial grove in honor of the six.

Throughout the day, the university will lower the Duke, North Carolina and United States flags across campus, as requested by NC Gov. Pat McCrory.

At 5 p.m. university carillonneur Samuel Hammond will play memorial and patriotic music for the daily carillon recital.

Several students are also attempting to organize a memorial event. Students currently plan to meet at the Bryan Center Plaza around 4:30 p.m. and hold a moment of silence around 4:58 p.m. just prior to the carillon recital.

Update: Two Duke employees have posted their thoughts and memories of the attacks:

Chris Heltne writes about what Washington, DC, was like that day.

Omid Safi offers thoughts about the suffering that entered the world on that day.
