Duke professor Kerry Haynie, a native North Carolinian, will serve as faculty director of the Trinity Scholars and Alumni Endowed Scholars program.

These merit scholarship programs, which cover tuition, room and board, are housed in the Office of Undergraduate Scholars and Fellows (OUSF). The Trinity Scholarships were created by alumni from North Carolina and South Carolina to attract stellar students from their home states. The Alumni Endowed Undergraduate Scholarship was established by the Duke Alumni Association to recognize academic and personal achievements of alumni children or grandchildren.

“We are lucky that such an accomplished North Carolina scholar has agreed to lead these programs for outstanding students, including from our state,” said Steve Nowicki, dean and vice provost for undergraduate education. “Professor Haynie also will be an important part of our OUSF team in the coming year as we work to nurture even more vibrant intellectual exchanges across the entire campus.”

Haynie is a professor of political science and African and African-American studies. He also directs the Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity and Gender in the Social Sciences, and coordinates the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program. The Kannapolis native, who earned his doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, also has received numerous awards for mentoring and service.

Haynie succeeds Michael Gustafson, an engineering professor who recently was named director of the B.N. Duke Scholars.
