Duke Appreciation Free Movie Night This Friday

Employees and families invited to watch (and do the robot) during Disney’s “Big Hero 6”

Join other Duke employees and their family members for a free screening of Disney's "Big Hero 6" on May 15. The movie begins at 8:30 p.m. on the East Campus Lawn.

Go on an adventure with personal companion robot Baymax and robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada during Duke’s free outdoor movie night on Friday.Duke employees and their families are invited to the free outdoor screening of Disney’s “Big Hero 6” as part of Duke Appreciation in May to celebrate the work contributions and talents of staff and faculty across the University and Health System. “These annual Duke Appreciation events bring together colleagues from all across the university,” said Kyle Cavanaugh, vice president for administration. “Let’s celebrate our Duke community by inviting family and friends to celebrate with us.”The event starts at 8 p.m. on the East Campus Lawn; the movie will begin at 8:30 p.m. “Big Hero 6,” which follows robot Baymax and his group of friends through San Fransokyo, is rated PG and was released in theaters in November 2014.Duke families are invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets and movie snacks. Free hot dogs, popcorn and drinks will be provided while supplies last for up to four people per family. A valid DukeCard ID is required. No pets are allowed at the event.Patty Chase, a production manager with Duke University Press, said she is planning to see “Big Hero 6” on East Campus. As part of last year’s Duke Appreciation, she and her boyfriend watched “The LEGO Movie.” They brought snacks and saw some of her Duke University Press coworkers. “I remember it being a nice night, and there were all kinds of people there who I imagined worked in all parts of the university,” Chase said. “It was very collegial, friendly and welcoming.”

For the May 15 Movie Night, Duke employees and their families can park in all East Campus lots after 6 p.m., including the Carr/Pegram lot. Parking will also be available at Asbury United Methodist Church off West Markham Avenue, in the Duke Human Resources lot off Broad Street after 5 p.m., and at Smith Warehouse after 6 p.m. The Bull City Connector bus also runs until midnight on Fridays, and the route includes an East Campus stop at the intersection of Main Street and Campus Drive.In case of inclement weather, the movie night will be at 8 p.m. May 22 on the East Campus Lawn. Rain cancelations will be posted on Working@Duke’s Twitter and Facebook pages.
