Nepalese Students Hold Candlelight Vigil to Remember Earthquake Victims

About 50 people gathered outside Duke Chapel Friday evening for a candlelight vigil in remembrance of victims from last Saturday’s earthquake in Nepal.

Nepalese students from Duke, UNC Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University spoke briefly about the earthquake’s impact on their families and others across the Himalayan nation. They and other attendees, who also included Americans who have lived in Nepal and others, sang Nepal’s national anthem and chanted several short prayers.

The speakers thanked everyone for their support of local fund-raising campaigns for earthquake relief, including an online campaign launched by Duke’s four undergraduates from Nepal, which has raised more than $25,000.
