Keeping Duke Safe from Sexual Harassment

All faculty and staff required to take online training in next 90 days

As part of an ongoing effort to provide a safe and welcoming environment for all members of the campus community and to reduce the potential for sexual misconduct on campus, Duke is introducing the second round of required online training for all faculty and staff.

The training, which was first introduced in 2013, fulfills Duke’s compliance with federal regulations and guidance related to Title IX and the Violence Against Women Act. Faculty and staff are required to take the training every two years. It covers how to recognize, prevent and report sexual and related misconduct, which includes all forms of sex/gender-based harassment, sexual violence, sexual exploitation, relationship violence (domestic violence and dating violence), and stalking.

“It is both symbolic and significant that we begin this training in April, which is Sexual Assault Awareness Month,” said Benjamin Reese, vice president for Institutional Equity and Duke’s chief diversity officer. All faculty and staff will be expected to complete the brief online training within the next 90 days.”

Specific training modules will be assigned to individuals in the Learning Management System based on their job code. Faculty and staff will take either “Keeping Duke Safe Training for Faculty and Staff Non-Supervisory roles” or “Keeping Duke Safe Training for Faculty and Staff with Managerial and Supervisory roles.” The training includes a series of questions that must be answered correctly (at least 80 percent score) to successfully complete the training.

The training will take approximately 15-20 minutes for faculty and staff and 20-25 minutes for supervisors and managers and will be offered online through the Learning Management System (LMS), which is accessible through the MyCareer section of the Duke@Work self-service website (work.duke.edu).

An email with a direct link to the Learning Management System will be sent to faculty and staff at their Duke email account. After logging in, users will need to click the Launch link to access the training.

“Staff who do not have regular access to a computer as part of their job responsibilities should be provided time and access through one of Duke’s computer labs, libraries or other available computer station to complete the training,” said Howie Kallem, Duke’s Title IX coordinator. “If a department would prefer to arrange for an on-site presentation or training or for a follow up session that can provide additional information, we would glad to make arrangements.”

Kallem suggested contacting the Office for Institutional Equity at 919-684-8222 or at oie-help@duke.edu to make arrangements for an on-site meeting.

Visit the Human Resources website for more information about how to access and use Duke’s Learning Management System.
