Nominations are now being accepted for the Algernon Sydney Sullivan award, which will be presented to a Duke graduating senior and to a Duke University and Health System faculty member, staff or graduate/professional student.

The New York Southern Society established the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards in 1925 in memory of Sullivan, a southerner who became a prominent lawyer, businessman and philanthropist in New York in the late 19th century. The award seeks to perpetuate the excellence of character and humanitarian service of Sullivan by recognizing such qualities as:

  • Recognition of Selflessness
  • Generosity of Service
  • Nobility of Character
  • Person of Integrity
  • Depth of Spirituality

In 2014, the awards went to Bob Newlin, chief analyst and program director in the Office of the Provost, and student Hannah Ward.  Newlin had spent more than two decades supporting Duke faculty with a variety of technical help and know-how while also giving much of his time volunteering within the Durham community, most notably the Durham Crop Walk and Durham Congregations in Action.

Ward was honored for her volunteer work through Duke Chapel and other faith communities.

To recommend a member of the Duke community for either category, submit a letter of nomination describing the candidate's "characteristics of heart, mind, and conduct as evidence of a spirit of love and helpfulness to other men and women."  Give specific examples of how this individual's actions have directly affected the lives of others.

The nomination form is on the Provost's website. Nominations are due by March 13.
