Coach K - Autism Awareness Weekend in College Basketball 2014

Coach K will sport an autism awareness lapel pin at the home game against Notre Dame on Saturday. The coach is participating in the "Coaches Powering Forward for Autism" campaign for the second year.

"By wearing the pin during one of the biggest games of the year, Coach K is signaling that the lives of people with autism matter,” said junior Manoj Kanagaraj, president of the Duke student group Autism Speaks U Duke. “This means a tremendous amount to the students, faculty members and families in Durham and beyond who are committed to raising awareness and reducing stigma toward individuals with autism spectrum disorder.”

Members of the student group will hand out stickers and donuts at K-ville before the 1 p.m. game. They have raised more than $1,000 for the second annual Autism Awareness Weekend in College Basketball. Two NCAA coaches who have children with autism started the event.

An estimated one in 68 children have been diagnosed with the disorder.

Currently one in every 68 children and one in 42 boys is diagnosed on the spectrum. Individuals with autism often have repetitive behaviors and debilitating medical issue - See more at: http://events.autismspeaks.org/faf/home/ccp.asp?ievent=1125016&ccp=66003...
