Dr. Steven Scott Joins Duke's Board of Trustees

Scott has nearly 35 years of experience in medicine and medical administrative businesses.

Dr. Steven Scott, chairman of the entrepreneurial medical investment company Scott Holdings, LLC, has been appointed to the Duke University Board of Trustees.

Scott will fill a vacancy on the board for the remainder of the fiscal year and then be put forward for election to begin a six-year term on July 1. He will serve on the trustees’ Business and Finance Committee, as well as the Medical Center Academic Affairs Committee.

Scott’s nearly 35 years of experience in medicine and medical administrative businesses include founding Vista HealthPlan, a nationwide HMO with revenues of $1.2 billion and 300,000 members, which was sold in 2007 to Coventry Health Care, Inc.

Scott is also founder and former chairman of Phoenix Physicians, a national provider of hospital-based physician practice management services that was sold to Envision Healthcare in 2014.

In addition to currently investing in various health care enterprises throughout the Southeast, Scott serves on boards that further higher education development, particularly in graduate education and research. This includes serving as chair of the Board of Trustees at the University of Florida, and on several other university-based advisory boards.

At Duke, in addition to being a member of the board of trustees, Scott serves on the Duke University Health System Board of Directors, where he chairs the Patient Safety and Clinical Quality Committee.

He also is a member of the steering committee of the Duke Forward, Duke’s seven-year comprehensive fundraising campaign, and worked on the planning committee for Duke Medicine’s “Medicine that Changes the World” fundraising campaign.

Scott earned his medical degree from Indiana University Medical Center and completed his residency training at the Duke University Medical Center. He is a member of the American Medical Association, the North Carolina Medical Society and the Florida Medical Society, among others. He is also an assistant consulting professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Duke.

He and his wife, Becky, live in Palm Beach County, Florida. They have five children, including Daniel Scott, who earned his medical degree and MBA from Duke, and Elizabeth Scott, who is enrolled in the Duke University School of Medicine.
