Duke Bus Driver Killed in Accident

Vincent Davis, 52, of Durham had worked as a bus driver at Duke for nearly two years.

A Duke University driver was killed Monday afternoon when the van he was driving was struck by a car that allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of Erwin and Morreene roads, according to Durham police.

Vincent Davis, 52, of Durham had worked as a bus driver at Duke for nearly two years.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Davis family,” said Kyle Cavanaugh, Duke’s vice president for administration. “We are absolutely devastated by this tragic accident, and we will do all we can to provide support to Vincent’s family and to the Parking and Transportation family.”

According to a Durham police news release, the accident happened around 3 p.m. when Jacob Samuels, 18, of Chapel Hill was driving a car south on Erwin Road and allegedly ran a red light, striking the westbound Duke passenger van driven by Davis.

The impact caused the van to flip on its side. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene. Samuels and a passenger in one of the vehicles were taken to Duke Hospital for treatment of injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening, police said.

Samuels has been charged with running a red light and death by vehicle.

Two vehicles stopped for the red light in the northbound lanes of Erwin Road were also damaged in the accident. The intersection was closed for more than three hours.
