The Joint is Jumping: Jazz Ensemble, Opera Workshop to Perform This Weekend

This weekend, swing, swing, swing! at a performance saluting the Big Band Era, also known as the Swing Era, its band leaders and singers and the music that filled dance halls and sold records during some of the most challenging times in American history.  The Duke Opera Workshop, directed by Susan Dunn, and the Duke Jazz Ensemble, directed by John Brown, will present hit songs from the 1930s and 1940s with costumes and staging.

Pieces will include Billy Strayhorn's "Take the A Train," Harry Warden's and Mack Gordon's "Chattanooga Choo-Choo," Irving Berlin's "White Christmas," Les Brown's "Sentimental Journey," and many others.

Performances are at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, in Baldwin Auditorium.  tickets are $10 for general admission, $5 for senior citizens and free for students. To buy tickets, call 684-4444 or go online at http://tickets.duke.edu.
