Working@Duke brings you five, free fun things to do at Duke every month from events listed on the Duke Events calendar. We’ve compiled some activities for November; check Duke Today the first week in December for the next post in this monthly series. Have fun discovering all the things that Duke and Durham have to offer.

Nov. 4, 7, 13, 18 and 20 – Learn Music from a ‘Master’

In this unique setting, open to the public, Duke students perform excerpts from music created by the master teachers. After an initial performance of up to 10 minutes, each master musician will offer a critique and work with students on specific aspects of their playing. At the end, students perform the excerpt in its entirety to showcase the difference in sound from start of the session to finish.

Master classes begin at 5 p.m. in the Nelson Music Room in the East Duke Building.

Tuesday, Nov. 11 – Fit in Fitness, Learn About Your Health

From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., join at least one Duke Family Medicine Center physician for “Walk With a Doc,” a one-mile stroll through Sarah P. Duke Gardens that also includes the opportunity to ask general health and medical questions from the Duke doctor(s) who join the group.

Participants meet in the lobby of the Duke Family Medicine Center in the Pickens Building at 2100 Erwin Road before beginning the walk to Duke Gardens. Walkers should wear comfortable clothing and shoes; the event takes place rain or shine. No registration is needed.

Nov. 13 – Celebrate Another Year of Duke Forest

Duke Forest has a variety of fun activities planned for its annual gathering from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at New Hope Improvement Association Center at 4012 Whitfield Road in Chapel Hill.

Staff will offer highlights of recent research, teaching, and forest management activities and guest speaker Kelly Oten, forest health monitoring coordinator with the state Forest Service, will offer insight into invasive species and their impacts on local forests.

Winning entries from Duke Forest’s annual photography contest will be on display and visitors can celebrate the 36-year career of retired resource manager, Judd Edeburn. Refreshments will also be served.

Registration is required to attend and Duke community members can sign up online.

Friday, Nov. 21 – ‘Kickback’ with Students, Colleagues

Open to all members of the Duke community, the Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity hosts “Kickback Friday” to help students and employees start their weekend in a friendly and social way. The event, which includes refreshments, runs from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Center’s office in the Bryan Center. It offers a chance for Duke allies and members of the campus lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community to relax and interact casually.

Sunday, Nov. 23 – Get Artsy with the Family

From noon to 4 p.m. the Nasher Museum of Art welcomes families with live entertainment, arts-and-crafts projects and free admission into exhibitions and galleries during “Free Family Day.”

Visitors will have the chance to see Miro: The Experience of Seeing, the first-ever presentation of the final 20 years of work by the Spanish-born artist. Entry into Nasher’s galleries will be on a first-come, first-served basis, and visitors may need to wait in line before entering.
