New Duke Faculty, Staff Get a Look at Durham History

durham tour

Standing high in the NC Mutual Life Building, Barbara Lau, director of the Pauli Murray Project, points out to new faculty and staff members some of the key sights of Durham's history during a tour Saturday of downtown Durham.

The second of two scheduled tour for new faculty and staff members, the sightseeing introduced them to Durham's interesting past and encouraged them to think about how they could partner with the community.  The tour also showcased the extraordinary transformation of the downtown region, and Duke's role in assisting that effort, as well as its ongoing role in supporting Durham neighborhoods, schools and other institutions.

The tour was led by Lau and Sam Miglarese and Mayme Webb-Bledsoe of the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership. It was coordinated by Duke University’s Service-Learning office, which aims to support Duke faculty interested in connecting their teaching with the Durham community. Co-sponsors included Trinity College of Arts & Sciences, the Forum for Scholars & Publics, Duke’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative and the Duke Office of Civic Engagement.”
