Tornado Warning Issued for Marine Lab

Tornado Warning Issued Until 8:30 a.m.

Updated 8:41 a.m., Friday, Aug. 1.The tornado warning for Carteret County has expired, and the storm cell has moved north of the Duke Marine Lab. The National Weather Service has indicated that severe storms may continue to pass through the coastal area throughout the day and residents should continue to monitor weather forecasts for more information. The Duke Police Department has been in contact with meterologists, who indicate that the risk for severe weather for the Durham area is low.  Original Post:The National Weather Service has issued a tornado warning for Carteret County, which includes the Duke Marine Lab, until 8:30 a.m. Friday. The National Weather Service doppler radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado near Oceana Pier or near Morehead City. A water spout was reported near this area, moving north at 20 mph. Officials are in contact with representatives from the Marine Lab, and the small number of staff on site are in a safe location. Duke officials are monitoring the storm closely and will send an update as conditions change.
