Traffic Advisory: Student Move-In Begins Tuesday

First-year students arrive Aug. 19 on East Campus; West Campus move-in is Aug. 22

Motorists traveling to and around Duke's East and West campuses should allow for extra travel time beginning Tuesday, Aug. 19, and Aug. 22 to Aug. 24, due to student move-in for the start of the academic year.

No parking on East Campus

On Aug. 19, first-year students will move into residence halls on East Campus. With heavier traffic and an increase in parking needs, all parking areas on East Campus will be cleared of vehicles from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.. In addition, all East Campus entrances will be closed except to students with authorized passes from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

As a parking alternative, Duke permit holders can park on side streets on the perimeter of East Campus, which include Broad Street, West Markham Avenue and North Buchanan Boulevard. A two-hour parking time limit will not be enforced by city police during move-in. Employees with permits for East Campus lots may park in the visitor lot at Smith Warehouse off Buchanan Boulevard, where attendants and signage will assist with parking.

Traffic, parking adjustments on West Campus

Due to expected traffic and congestion, the intersection of Duke University and Towerview roads will be closed between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Aug. 19 and 20. Motorists traveling on Duke University Road will not be able to turn onto Towerview Road. However, the iron gates at the intersection of Wannamaker Drive and Duke University Road will be open to allow traffic into the area.

Employees who park in the Eden lots on Towerview Road will still be able to access the lots after 8:30 a.m. by driving through the Blue Zone at the iron gates and entering Towerview Road at the traffic circle. A valid Green Zone permit must be shown to traffic officers to proceed to the Edens lots.

On West Campus, move-in will take place Aug. 22 to Aug. 24 and could slow traffic around Duke University Road and the traffic circle on Towerview Road.Parking and entry in some lots will also be restricted:

  • Entry to the Blue Zone will only be through the iron gates off Duke University Road.
  • The parking lots off Edens Drive will be designated as an unloading zone Aug. 23 and 23 and not used for parking.
  • Small sections of the Card Gym Lot will be used for unloading, restricting some parking on Aug. 22.
  • All spaces except for reserved spaces in Card Gym and Edens "B" and "C" lots will only be available for students moving in on Aug. 23 and 24.

Staff will be positioned at the entrance of lots around West Campus residence halls to direct permit holders to parking spaces and students to unloading areas.
