Duke IT Security Office and Cisco Recruiting for Fall Joint Internship Program

Duke’s IT Security Office (ITSO)—in collaboration with Cisco Systems, the maker of most of Duke’s network equipment and much of its security equipment—has initiated a program that gives students an opportunity to gain real world experience working with security, network, and log analysis tools that are in everyday use at Duke University. After first working in Duke’s ITSO, successful incumbents will have an opportunity to apply and further develop their skills with Cisco Systems as a security incident analyst in a summer (paid) intern position.

The Duke ITSO is responsible for the overall coordination, implementation, and assessment of information security at Duke University. The overall goal of ITSO is to achieve the optimal level of confidentiality, integrity and availability of Duke's information assets and systems while providing a safe and secure computing environment for research, teaching, learning, and the everyday conduct of university business.

The incumbents will find themselves working on both small-scale projects while assisting the IT Security team with daily operational responsibilities.

DUTIES & WORK PERFORMED:

  • Assist in daily monitoring of the intrusion protection and detection (IPS/IDS) and log analysis systems, working with the security team and service desk to address security issues
  • Provide feedback on the IDS/IPS and log analysis systems to assist in tuning the systems for better detection and reporting rates
  • Define and assist in small-scale projects to improve operational efforts

This is a great opportunity for someone interested in the Information Security field to gain real, practical experience while working in a university setting. The incumbent will work with advanced security technologies, gain experience in incident handling and triage, work with ITSO strategic partners like Cisco and Splunk, and with IT professionals across campus.

EDUCATION:

Candidate must be enrolled as a student at Duke University with coursework from Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, or have similar experience with software development skillset or interest in information security.

EXPERIENCE & SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of IT systems, TCP/IP protocols, network devices and applications, or code development
  • Experience or a desire for experience in information security
  • Excellent verbal and written skills

EXTERNAL INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY:

The incumbents will be provided opportunity to join Cisco Systems as summer interns in the security incident analyst intern position. Primary responsibilities in the internship program will include:

  • Assisting in analyzing potential security events detected in network environments and either resolving or escalating the event as appropriate
  • Providing feedback into the Threat Defense platform and processes in order to increase the detection fidelity and accuracy of the Threat Defense solution
  • Working with security incident investigators to do deeper analysis of detected events

INTERVIEW:

Candidates will be jointly interviewed by the members of the Duke’s ITSO office and Cisco’s Security Solutions practice.
