Duke in Pictures: Self-Defense Moves

Female Duke employees learn basics of self-defense for free

Women who work at Duke learned some basic self-defense moves Wednesday during a free campus training session with “Lady Tigers” of White Tiger Taekwondo.

Hosted by LIVE FOR LIFE, Duke’s employee wellness program, and led by eight martial arts students and White Tiger master Rondy McKee, employees learned techniques ranging from hitting and kicking, breaking out of holds and using every day items for protection.

Melissa Neeley, an operations support staff member at the John Hope Franklin Center, was most impressed with learning how to use a cell phone to strike a blow.

“These days, someone trying to grab you while you are alone and distracted on your cell is a very real scenario,” Neeley said. “This was a great demo with practical hands-on. It's the kind of thing every woman should learn and review every few years because there is no time to think about the best response when you are attacked.”

About 45 people attended the session, which included employees and their daughters.
