At least once a week, John Brown travels from his office on East Campus to the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club to eat at one of only two restaurants in the state to receive both the AAA Four Diamond and Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Award.

"My favorite is short ribs, which is my staple whenever I go there," said Brown, associate professor of the practice of music and director of the Duke Jazz Program. "One cannot leave without experiencing the shrimp and corn chowder, either. And don't forget the chocolate molten cake."

Brown typically sets up his favorite dining experience while hosting guest artists or meetings and enjoys up to 50 percent off his food bill as a member of the Executive Club.

Through the rest of this month, all Duke faculty and staff have the chance to enjoy the same kind of experience as Brown at discounted rates, thanks to a special deal for a new annual membership in the Washington Duke Inn's Executive Club.

In addition to receiving up to 50 percent off dining, members get two complimentary guest room nights, one complimentary Saturday Brunch voucher for up to two people, invitations to special events and more.

A new "Classic" membership typically costs $349, but Duke staff and faculty pay $262 through April 30. The deal is offered by PERQS, Duke's employee discount program.

"The main benefit for me is having an established relationship with hotel staff to the point it feels like family," Brown said. "Being there feels like home."

That's a pampering experience that Barbara Woolley likes to share with others. While she loves to take advantage of dining discounts to enjoy executive chef Jason Cunningham's crab cakes, she's shared her free overnight stays as Christmas presents. When a friend told her about the Duke employee discount for membership several years ago, Woolley didn't hesitate to sign up.

"It's this elegant, local place and between the discounted meals, brunch, tea and two nights, I thought, 'what do I have to lose?' " said Woolley, director of health information management at the Medical Center. "It's hard to turn down when you've got such a wonderful venue right in our own backyard."

Duke faculty and staff can find a complete list of benefits on the Washington Duke's website. To sign up with the special PERQS rate, employees could call the Executive Club office at (919) 313-9604 and identify as a Duke employee.
