About 50 Duke Athletics staff members volunteered in K-Ville March 10 to clean up after months of student camping and Duke's 93-81 win over UNC.

Volunteers wore blue gloves and wielded trash bags as they removed abandoned couches, wood pallets, a barbecue grill and lounge chairs, and "pretty much anything you can think of that an 18- to 20-year-old kid would put in a tent for a couple of months," said Dan Perlmutter, Duke head coach for Olympic sports performance.

"Clean up K-Ville" was organized by Duke University Athletic Association (DUAA) Serves, a committee within the athletics department that plans service activities. The committee has held a campus cleanup for the past three years.

Perlmutter, a member of the committee, said the cleanup was a way to mark the return from spring break to a clean K-Ville and the beginning weeks of spring sports.

"It's a great way to combine support of the campus with the way that our students support athletics," he said. "The K-Ville experience itself is so huge, not just for the basketball team. It really means a lot to the athletes in a variety of sports."
