Here's a Duke freshman off to a great start. Brittany Wenger was recently named one of Time Magazine's "People Under 30 Who are Changing the World." She presented at the White House Science Fair and spoke at Tedx CERN. On campus, the A.B. Duke scholar is doing research on ovarian cancer diagnosis.

Speaking of research, Duke scientists have identified a natural compound found in figs and celery that can be used against breast cancers. It works by disrupting DNA replication in cancerous cells when activated by ultraviolet light.

On the romantic front, alumni Ian Holljes and Rebecca Friedman just got married. Holljes is a founding member of the band Delta Rae and proposed to Friedman at a New Year's Eve concert in front of 10,000 people.

Noted biologist E.O. Wilson recently spoke at Duke. "We study and save [biodiversity] to our great benefit," Wilson said. "We ignore and degrade it to our great peril."

Finally, Senior Hannah Ward is this year's student preacher. She delivers a sermon in Duke Chapel on Sunday, February 23, on the perils of pursuing perfection.
