Tell Duke How You Commute, Win a Prize

Annual survey helps shape alternative transportation offerings

When it comes to your commute, it's time to help Duke help you.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in an annual survey administered by Triangle Transit to learn more about local commuting behaviors. It's an effort that allows Parking and Transportation Services to collect travel behavior information to best evaluate parking and commuting options for the Duke community.

Data from the survey will help Duke monitor progress as it makes an effort to reduce the rate of faculty and staff who drive alone to campus as well as adjust commuter benefits programs to better serve the community.

By helping Duke by providing commute information, survey participants will be entered into a drawing for Duke Stores merchandise.

"The data we compile helps us provide tailored transportation programs and improve on the alternative commute options we already offer," said Alison Carpenter, manager for Duke's transportation demand management program. "For example, we know the number of people commuting by bus has been rising, so we're working in coordination with Triangle Transit to create a mobile app that helps students and employees find housing in transit-friendly areas."

The survey, available through Feb. 21, consists of multiple-choice questions. Responses and comments are confidential.  The survey can be accessed here.

Last year's survey revealed that 75 percent of employees drive alone to work, a number Duke is working to reduce to curb employee carbon emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2024.
