Duke's graduation speaker this year will be ... General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a Duke alumnus. Dempsey said his time at Duke introduced him to "another world, full of new ideas, viewpoints, issues and stories."

The university has a new look online. Duke's revamped homepage features a mobile-friendly design, social media updates and more multimedia elements.

Some potentially explosive findings. A Duke study finds Washington, D.C. has more than five thousand underground natural gas pipeline leaks. The researchers recommend an accelerated repair schedule for the pipes.

Former President George H. W. Bush was on hand for the men's basketball game against N.C. State. Bush recognized Coach Mike Krzyzewski for his support of cancer research and prevention. And, Duke won the game handily.

Finally, British novelist Zadie Smith is the keynote speaker for this year's Blackburn Literary Festival on January 30. The Philadelphia Inquirer called her, "one of the English-speaking world's best chroniclers of race, class, and identity in urban confines."
