Slavic Studies Professor Wins Book Award

Beth Holmgren is honored again for her work on 19th century Polish stage actress Helena Modjeska.

Beth Holmgren, chair of Duke's Department of Slavic and Eurasian Studies, has been honored once again for her 2011 book chronicling the life and travels of 19th century Polish stage actress Helena Modjeska.

The Polish American Historical Association honored Holmgren Jan. 3 for "Starring Madame Modjeska: On Tour in Poland and America." In the book, Holmgren examined the life and times of Modjeska, a popular Polish entertainer who immigrated to California and performed extensively across the United States.

Holmgren previously received the Kulczycki Book Prize for Polish Studies from the Association of Slavic, East European and Eurasian Studies for the same work.
