Durham, NC - Four politicians under 40 will speak at Duke University's Sanford School of Public Policy this spring in the Connect2Politics speaker series, part of an initiative of school's Hart Leadership Program.

Kicking off the series will be Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Ind., who will speak at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, in the Sanford School's Rhodes Conference Room. The event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited.

Buttigieg is the youngest American mayor leading a city of more than 100,000 people. He will discuss his career path from Harvard student, to Rhodes Scholar, to McKinsey consultant, to mayor of his hometown.

Three additional speakers scheduled for the Connect2Politics series are New York Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis on Feb. 18, San Francisco Supervisor Jane Kim on March 27, and San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro on April 1.

"We were interested to interact with young politicians at the state and municipal levels because many of them are stepping up to tackle issues that Washington has left unsolved," said Alma Blount, director of the Hart Leadership Program.

In association with the lecture series, The Hart Leadership Program is working with a 15-member student committee to explore ways to build a more robust political culture among Duke undergraduates. These students will engage with the featured speakers throughout the semester.
