In 2009, he was confirmed by the Senate as the head of the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the agency responsible for official U.S. government energy statistics and analysis, where he served until 2011.Newell has also served as the senior economist for energy and environment on the President's Council of Economic Advisers, and is a university fellow and member of the board of directors at Resources for the Future. Newell is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and has provided expert advice and consulted with many private, governmental, non-governmental and international institutions.
