Clean Out Unwanted Items Before the Holidays

Divert your unwanted items from the landfill by donating them to the Duke Free Store

We all know about the 3 R's (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle), but did you know that it is more environmentally responsible to reduce and reuse rather than recycle? The Duke Free Store is a campus initiative to increase reuse of unwanted items on campus. Instead of throwing items away to a landfill, you can donate them to Duke Recycles to be given away at twice monthly Free Store events. The Free Store can accept most donations, but cannot accept items that are alive, hazardous, illegal, or very large (i.e., couches, desks, etc). For Students - To get rid of items before the holidays, use donation boxes in several locations:

  • The Bryan Center - box on the right if you enter from The Plaza
  • Wannamaker 4 Common room
  • Edens 1A - Common room
  • Keohane Atrium
  • Craven C Common room
  • Kilgo O Common room
  • Few (FF) OIT Lab

The boxes will be labeled "Duke Free Store Donations." You can drop off items there until Friday, December 13. Alternatively, you can visit the Free Store in the spring semester to drop off (or pick up) items. Like the Free Store Facebook page for updates on Free Store dates. For Staff - If you are ready to donate items, you can bring them to the Bryan Center donation box through December 13. In order to streamline future donations, we also request that you answer a short, four question survey. This will help the Free Store better understand how to collect future donations from staff and offices around campus.

Please note that Duke-purchased items must be processed and tracked through the Duke Surplus Property office.  To place a pick up request for Duke property, please visit: http://finance.duke.edu/procurement/surplus/index.php.
