West Main Street Reopens to Traffic

Project to replace bridge finished Thursday

After months of waiting, Duke community members and local residents are able to drive along the entirety of Main Street again.

The state Department of Transportation on Thursday evening removed road blockades and allowed a full flow of traffic on West Main Street, where a nearly six-month project replaced the West Main Street bridge along East Campus. Crews spent yesterday removing equipment and signage, restoring east and west-bound traffic along the road.

As part of replacing the 63-year old bridge, West Main Street along East Campus has been reduced to one lane on both sides to provide extra space for bicycle lanes.

Now that construction is complete, Duke buses will resume their normal schedule and routes. Notably, the C-2 Duke transit bus has once again started using West Main for its route that services East, Central and West campuses.
