October will be an exciting month for foodies across Duke’s campus.

As part of its annual efforts to highlight health, nutrition and people's connection to food, Sustainable Duke and other organizations are hosting several food-related events as part of a month-long celebration of Food Day on Oct. 24. Events include a food photo contest, festivals and more.

“We want to use this month as an opportunity to highlight the importance of making food choices that aren’t only sustainable, but healthy and tasty,” said Casey Roe, outreach coordinator with Sustainable Duke. “Food is a natural way to bring a community together.”

Through Oct. 11, Duke students and employees can take part in Sustainable Duke’s annual Food Day photo contest for a chance to win a gift certificate to Bull City Burger and Brewery and a seat at a special Food Day dinner on Oct. 24. Duke community members can submit a photo showcasing the importance of food to them by emailing sustainability@duke.edu or on the Sustainable Duke Facebook page. Voting will take place on the Facebook page from Oct. 12 to 18.

Last year’s winner, graduate student Alice Kodama, shared a picture from Muley Point, Utah, where she made crepes with chocolate and whipped cream.

"Food is essential to life, but eating delicious, sustainable food is really what counts,” Kodama wrote in her winning submission. “I love to cook in the outdoors, where I everything tastes 10 times better."

In addition to the contest, students, faculty and staff are invited to two festivals on Oct. 19.

From 2 to 5 p.m., the Duke Campus Farm will host the “Beets and Sweets Festival,” where visitors can sample food made from the farm’s beets and sweet potatoes. More information can be found on the Duke Events calendar.

Later that day, from 4:30 to 10 p.m., Duke’s student agricultural group, Farmhand, hosts the Farmhand Fall Festival at Woodcrest Farm at 5604 Dairyland Road in Hillsborough. Activities include pumpkin carving, hayrides, bluegrass music, pig roast and more.
