The Toll of Concussions in the NFL

League of Denial

ESPN investigative reporters Steve Fainaru, left, and Mark Fainaru-Wada, right,  (with Duke Professor Philip Bennett, center, the film managing editor) held a special two-hour screening of League of Denial, the provocative new film from PBS FRONTLINE that tells the inside story of the National Football League's response to the risks of head injuries in professional football.

Bennett, who before coming to the DeWitt Wallace Center at the Sanford School of Public Policy was FRONTLINE managing editor, brought filmmakers Fainaru and Fainaru-Wada to Duke to show the film and discuss its findings.

One key finding was the National Football League attempted to discredit peer-reviewed research showing connecting football concussions to severe degenerative brain injury known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). The film was based on a book called League of Denial written by Fainaru and Fainaru-Wada.
