Committee Selected to Lead Search for New Nursing Dean

Dr. James Tulsky, Duke professor of medicine and nursing, will chair a search committee tasked with finding a successor to outgoing School of Nursing Dean Catherine Gilliss, Dr. Victor Dzau, chancellor for health affairs has announced.

The committee will begin meeting in September and will conduct an international search with preliminary interviews starting later this year.

Gilliss, who will step down as dean on June 30, 2014, has led the school for 10 years.  During that time, school enrollment has doubled to more than 800 students, new degree programs have been added and the school has risen dramatically in national rankings.

The committee will seek comments and nominations from Nursing School faculty and staff through a series of open meetings that will take place in early September. Members of the wider university community may also submit comments and nominations by emailing them to Dr. Tulsky. In addition to Tulsky, the search committee consists of:

Dr. Thomas Owens and Dr. Geoff Ginsburg, School of Medicine faculty; Ruth Anderson, Sharron Docherty, Ellie McConnell, Brigit Carter and Les Harmon, School of Nursing faculty; Bill Boulding, dean of the Fuqua School; Angela O'Rand, dean of social sciences; Mary Ann Fuchs, vice president of patient care and chief nurse executive for the Duke University Health System; and Greg Eagerton, chief nursing officer for the VA Hospital. Nursing PhD student Mariam Kayle will serve as a non-voting participant.

The goal is to have a candidate selected in the first quarter of 2014.
