Duke Chapel Welcomes Students with Worship, Burritos, Loco Pops

At the beginning of each academic year, the chapel offers two special services known as "Orientation Sunday" and "Opening Sunday."

"Orientation Sunday" Aug. 25 will include brass and organ music, accompanied by the 100-person Duke Chapel Choir, that highlights the celebratory feeling of the start of the school year.

Luke Powery, the dean of Duke Chapel, will preach sermons focused on hospitality and the significance of every person in the sight of God.

"Since arriving at Duke as dean of Duke Chapel last September, I've wanted to ensure that the chapel is a place of hospitality and welcome for constituencies throughout the university and the city," Powery said. "Whether you are high-church, low-church or no-church, it would be wonderful to have you present as we begin the year together as a community."

After the 11 a.m. service, the chapel will offer students a free lunch from Cosmic Cantina on the quad.

"Opening Sunday" Sept. 1 is an invitation of welcome to the Duke and Durham community that also includes brass and organ music. It includes a special commissioning service for PathWays Fellows, a one-year residential discernment program in Durham's West End neighborhood for recently graduated Duke alumni. After the 11 a.m. service, the chapel will give Loco Pops to students.
