Eric Mlyn, the executive director of DukeEngage, has been appointed to a new post in which he will guide university-wide civic engagement efforts.

Mlyn has added the title of assistant vice provost for civic engagement and will report to Stephen Nowicki, dean and vice provost for undergraduate education.

"Eric's work with DukeEngage has made important contributions to the civic engagement scene at Duke and in higher education more broadly," Nowicki said.  "I am confident he will help solidify Duke's role as a national leader in this arena."

The Duke Office of Civic Engagement (DOCE), formerly known as the Duke Center for Civic Engagement (DCCE), will be the hub for coordinating and amplifying existing and new civic engagement activities.  Megan Granda, executive director of DCCE, will assume a new title as DOCE director, and will work closely with Mlyn, as will Robert Korstad, professor of public policy and history, who will chair a faculty board for the DOCE.

Critical to this reorganization, said Granda, will be the newly constituted University Council on Civic Engagement, which will include advisory roles for key Duke civic and service-focused campus organizations. Korstad will chair the council.

Elaine Madison, who serves as associate director for Programs, Strategy and Assessment at DukeEngage and the director of the Duke University Community Service Center, will take on the additional role of executive director of the council.

"Civic engagement is alive and well at Duke," said Korstad, "but we still have a lot to do to realize the civic potential of our students, staff, faculty and community partners."
