Duke's Bereavement Services will host a service of remembrance for staff and faculty from 3 pm. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

The service, held in the Duke University Hospital Atrium Courtyard, is an opportunity for faculty, staff, students and visitors to reflect on the loss of co-workers, family members, friends and others. Bereavement services hosts the service of remembrance every April and October.

During the event, a Duke Hospital chaplain will read the names of Duke employees who died during the past six months. The ceremony will feature readings, poetry and music.

"Grief in the workplace is a normal part of life," said Joanna Parker, coordinator of Bereavement Services. "Support and recognition provided in the workplace, as well as by family and friends, can be a part of the healing process."

Managers and supervisors can call Parker at (919) 684-4750 to ensure that the names of late employees are included in the reading of names. "The reading focuses on employees who have died, but we invite participants to also use the time to reflect on the loss of any friends, family or patients they've worked with as well," Parker said.

In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will move to the lobby of Duke University Hospital.
