Sad news last week. The Duke community lost a beloved friend and mentor with the passing of chemistry professor James Bonk. You may have heard of "bonkistry," the affectionate name given to the chemistry courses he taught at Duke for more than 50 years.

Duke alumnus Mo Cowan, interim senator from Massachusetts, will deliver a keynote address April 13 during Reunion Weekend. Cowan's talk will be part of the university's commemoration of 50 years of black undergraduate students at Duke.

A recent survey conducted by Duke's Fuqua School of Business found that 88 percent of chief financial officers believe the U.S. should adopt a merit-based system for immigration. The CFOs support measures to make it easier for foreign science students to get work visas.

The faculty have been busy writing. Duke professors have new books out including "The Life of a Leaf," "The Chocolate Kiss" and "Mankind Beyond Earth."
