Busi's Story

A student discusses her long journey from South Africa to scholarship student at Duke

Sbusisiwe ("Busi") Sibeko is the first person in her family to go to college. She traveled from South Africa to Duke University in to study through The MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program.

With a financial commitment of $13.5 million from The MasterCard Foundation over the next nine years, Duke will educate seven classes of five students -- a total of 35 students. This year's scholars include: Olaotan Oyinkansola Awoyomi (Nigeria); Tian Chan Dong (South Africa); Allan Kipkogei Kiplagat (Kenya); Clive Mudanda (Zimbabwe) and Sbusisiwe Sibeko (South Africa).  See story here.

The program hopes to transform Africa by educating a select group of promising young students like Busi. This is her story.
