Lecture, Discussion Focus on International Peace Work in Palestine

Hebrew University of Jerusalem professor David Dean Shulman to speak, moderate panel

David Dean Shulman, a peace activist, India expert and humanities professor at Hebrew University of Jerusalem, will deliver two lectures and take part in a panel discussion on international peace efforts Oct. 17-18 at Duke University.

All events are free and open to the public.

On Wednesday, Oct. 17, Shulman, a member of the joint Israeli-Palestinian Life-in-Common (or Ta'ayush) grassroots movement for non-violence, will present the Duke Center for Civic Engagement's Annual Co-Being Lecture. "Re-Inventing Gandhi and Martin Luther King in Palestine: Notes From the Peace Front" takes place at 5 p.m. in Westbrook 0012 in the Duke Divinity School on West Campus.  Professor Laurie Patton, dean of the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences at Duke, will give brief comments after Shulman's lecture. A public reception and book signing will follow.  

On Thursday, Oct. 18, Shulman will moderate a panel discussion with faculty from area research universities that considers the rewards and challenges encountered in international peace work. The panel discussion takes place from 10 a.m.-noon in Westbrook 0014, also in the Divinity School. 

Also on Oct. 18, Shulman will deliver the Department of Religion’s annual lecture on "What Counts as True: A View from the Tamil Ramayana," at 4 p.m. in the Rubenstein Library's Biddle Rare Book Room on West Campus.
