Duke Responds to Bacterial Meningitis Case

University officials are working to contact individuals who may have come in close contact with a Duke undergraduate recently admitted to the hospital

University officials said Thursday they are working to contact individuals who may have come in close contact with a Duke undergraduate recently admitted to the hospital with a confirmed case of bacterial meningitis.

The student, who lives in a residence hall on Duke's West Campus, has been assisting in identifying classmates or others with whom he may have had close, intimate contact. Duke Student Health has also been working closely with the Durham County Health Department, which defines close contact as direct exposure to the student's saliva and other throat secretions. Examples of this might include kissing or sharing a drink or toothbrush.  Casual contact does not transmit the infection.

Dr. Kimberly Yarnall, medical director of Duke Student Health, sent a message to other residents of the hall on Thursday, updating them about the situation and seeking their "help in identifying other individuals who may have been in close contact with this student."

In her message, Yarnall reminded the students that Duke's student health center is open daily and can be contacted at (919) 681-9355. Non-students can contact the Durham County Health Department at (919) 560-7600.
