When Tonya Raines received an email informing her that her manager acknowledged her work by posting a note of kudos on Duke's "Making a Difference" blog, she shook her head in disbelief.

"I was amazed," said Raines, administrative assistant for the Biological Safety Division of the Occupational and Environmental Safety Office. "I didn't expect it because I figured I was just doing my job."

But Debbie Hunt, director of the Biological Safety Division, said Raines' energy and work ethic are vital in keeping the small, six-person office humming along. She wanted to thank Raines for her positive attitude, willing spirit and attention to detail. She finishes assignments with a smile and ensures the supply closet has what is needed "long before we ever realize we need it," Hunt said. "She not only keeps us organized, but keeps us in a good mood, no matter what happens."

As Hunt noted on the blog: "She truly helps make the team work."

Raines said the note on the blog illustrates the spirit of teamwork that makes the Biological Safety division a satisfying place to work.

"I left the office a few years ago to work someplace else, but I had to come back," said Raines, who has worked at Duke six years. "This was where I wanted to be."
