Incoming Duke Nursing Student Dies

Emily Beers is believed to have died of natural causes at age 27

It is with great sadness that I inform you that one of our incoming ABSN students has passed away. Emily Beers was found in her apartment by the Durham Police, believed to have died of natural causes. The school has been in contact with Emily's family and we will do all that we can to provide support during this difficult time.

Emily was a 27-year-old talented and bright young woman originally from Corsica, Pa., and had received her BS in biological sciences from Ohio Northern University in 2008. She had wanted to become a nurse because of her belief that nursing would give her the opportunity to become a caring and comprehensive clinician in service to others.  Without a doubt, the nursing profession would have benefited from Emily's talents and passion.

I ask that, as a community, we support and comfort each other as we mourn the passing of Emily.

Sincerely,

Catherine L. Gilliss

Dean of School of Nursing
