Malfunctioning Air Conditioning Closes Brodie Gym To July 2

Malfunctioning Air Conditioning Closes Brodie Gym To July 2

Brodie Recreation Center expected to remain closed through the weekend

Durham, NC - Due to a malfunctioning part with the air conditioning system at Brodie Recreation Center, the building closed at 12:30 p.m. Friday and will remain closed through the weekend.

Meghan Weiseman, facility coordinator for Brodie, said that a part in the air conditioning unit broke down Friday morning. Staff from Duke's Facilities Management Department worked to fix the problem but determined it wouldn't be resolved without a new part, which may be delivered to Duke as early as July 2.

Weiseman said that due to extreme heat expected in the Triangle throughout the weekend, Brodie will remain closed until at least 5 p.m. July 2.

High Temps Through Weekend

With temperatures above 100 on Friday, the National Weather Service expects triple-digit heat to remain through the weekend and into early next week. Current forcasts show highs at-or-above 100 until Tuesday, July 3. Due to the heat, the National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning, heat advisory, air quality alert and hazardous weather outlook for Durham.

Last week, Dr. Carol Epling, co-director of Duke's Employee Occupational Health and Wellness, offered tips on how to beat the heat.
