When you need to hit the reset button on life and recharge your batteries, what makes you feel renewed?

Duke faculty and staff are invited to submit their best vacation photo and share how Duke's paid time off benefit helped them recharge. Whether it's traveling abroad or within our 50 states, show us how time off helped renew work-life balance.

Each employee who submits one photo will be entered in a random drawing for a mini-vacation: a one-night stay and dinner and breakfast for two at the Washington Duke Inn in Durham.

Participants get one additional entry into the drawing if they convince a colleague to submit a vacation photo, too. Just make sure the co-worker provides your full name in the "recommended by" section on the submission form and submits his or her own photo.

Duke staff and faculty accrue 10 to 20 days of vacation a year, depending on job level and years of service.

Kathryn Helene uses her paid time off benefit to take a two-week vacation every September.

"I save up my pennies and my time for one big vacation each year," said Helene, senior practice partner for Duke's Learning and Organization Development.

Although taking a long weekend or occasional day off helps cope with stress, the best vacations are long ones, said Carol Retsch-Bogart, a counselor with Duke's Personal Assistance Service.

"Real vacations allow people to completely disengage from work and come back renewed," she said. "That's good for both the person and the organization."

While warm weather has just arrived, the clock is ticking. All photo submissions are due by July 23.

Here are instructions to send us your best shot:

You can submit a photo online or through campus mail.

To send a single print through campus mail, send the picture (at least 4-by-6) to Working@Duke, Box 90496. Include your name, email, phone number and short description of where and when the photo was taken, who is in the photo and how the vacation helped you renew. (Remember: If someone recommended you submit a photo, include his or her name with your information).

Photos must be taken within two years of date of entry; again, the deadline is July 23. Only one photo is eligible per staff or faculty member.
