Traffic/Parking Advisory: Tuesday Funeral Service for LeRoy Walker

Campus travel will be affected by services at Duke Chapel

Motorists traveling on and around West Campus Tuesday morning should allow for extra travel time due to funeral services at the Duke Chapel.

About 1,600 visitors are expected for the funeral of LeRoy Walker, chancellor emeritus of North Carolina Central University and former president of the United States Olympic Committee. Traffic on and around West Campus is expected to be heavy between 9:45 and 11 a.m. and 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The service begins at 11 a.m.

To accommodate guests on campus, parking will be made available in Parking Garage IV (Bryan Center garage), the Bryan Center Pay Lot and Duke University Road Lot #2 near Anderson Street. Should the Duke University Road lot fill, overflow parking will be provided in the Blue Zone, located off Wannamaker Drive. Duke community members who have permits for these locations will still have access to park.

Shuttle service for visitors will be provided starting at 9:30 a.m. from Duke University Road. Shuttles will also serve the Blue Zone, if necessary.

Members of Mr. Walker's family and special guests will use parking made available along Chapel Drive and in front of the Duke Chapel. Officers will be stationed near Duke Chapel to direct traffic and assist guests with parking.

Busing Route Change

In order to ensure students taking 2 p.m. block exams on Tuesday, May 1, are not delayed, Parking and Transportation Services will change the route of C-1 buses due to anticipated heavy traffic related to the funeral. Beginning at noon, buses leaving East Campus will discharge passengers at the circle on Science Drive in front of the Physics Building. Passengers will also be picked up at the Science Drive circle until 3 p.m., when normal service resumes at the West Campus bus stop on the Main Quadrangle.

From noon to 3 p.m., the C-1 buses will follow the same route as C-3 class change buses, except that they will turn onto Duke University Road at Anderson Street. Signs will be placed in the front of the buses traveling to Science Drive.
