German Labor and Social Affairs Minister Ursula von der Leyen spoke at the Fuqua School Wednesday about lessons learned the continuing financial crisis in Europe.

Leyen called for greater European unity to solve widespread fiscal problems. She defended the Euro currency and said it was not the cause of the current crisis.

In 2005, Leyen was appointed federal minister for family affairs, senior citizens, women and youth in Chancellor Angela Merkel's cabinet. In 2009, she was elected to the Bundestag, the parliament of Germany, and that same year assumed her current role as minister of labor and social affairs.  In her talk, she also discussed German labor issues, praising the country's emphasis on providing job training for unemployed people.
