Duke Credit Union sponsors community shred event May 5

Durham, NC - Start gathering your papers.

On May 5, Duke staff and faculty and Durham community members are invited to bring personal paperwork to the Duke Credit Union at 2200 West Main St. in Durham for shredding from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as nine million Americans have their identities stolen each year. Help keep private papers out of the hands of the wrong people by participating in this Community Shred event, co-sponsored by the Credit Union and SHRED-IT.

"Anything you wouldn't feel comfortable having a criminal reading should be shredded rather than just thrown away," said Dan Berry, chief operating officer for the Duke Credit Union. That includes items such as cancelled checks, income tax records, medical records, insurance records, old bills and other personal records that include social security number or other sensitive data.

Each employee or community member can bring up to four boxes of personal papers for shredding. Participants can also drop off electronic equipment, which will be properly cleaned and recycled by Metech, a national electronics recycling company.
